Thermal

Thermal & microclimate

Heat, shade, and evapotranspiration — engineered back into the site.

The problem

Urban heat islands, hardscape surface temperature, failing green-roof substrates.

Biochar is part of the toolkit for urban heat mitigation: reflective surface treatments, insulation blends, and water-holding soils that drive evapotranspirative cooling. Where a site needs a thermal strategy alongside its stormwater or soil strategy, we specify the media that serves both.

How we approach it

The specification path.

  1. Model the evapotranspirative load the site can support.
  2. Specify soil amendment and hardscape options that share a carbon base.
  3. Coordinate with stormwater and soil specs rather than compete with them.
